No One Chooses to Become a Refugee. What If It Were You?

No one chooses to become a refugee. No one chooses to leave their home behind, be separated from their family, interrupt their studies, lose their friends, or embark on a journey into the unknown.

Yet any one of us could one day find ourselves in that situation.

Throughout history, millions of people have been forced to flee war, persecution, violence, or disaster. It was in the aftermath of the Second World War, when Europe witnessed displacement on an unprecedented scale, that the international refugee protection system we know today was born.

More than seventy years later, the question remains: Are we living up to that promise?

Today, 118 million people around the world have been forcibly displaced. Among them are millions of young people whose dreams have been interrupted by circumstances beyond their control. Young people who want what any young person wants: the opportunity to learn, to develop their talents, to build a future, and to contribute to society.

But without education, what future are we offering them?

Education is far more than a fundamental right. It is protection. It is empowerment. It is hope. It is one of the most powerful tools we have to rebuild lives and communities.

And yet, one area of education continues to be overlooked in situations of forced displacement: higher education.

Even today, only a small percentage of refugees have access to university. For many, the dream of continuing their studies ends the moment they are forced to flee.

At Nexus 3.0, we believe it does not have to be this way.

That is why we work to expand access to higher education through Education Complementary Pathways, creating safe and sustainable opportunities for refugees and forcibly displaced students to continue their academic journey.

Recently, we designed and submitted it to the Government, PORTUS, a pilot initiative designed to strengthen and structure complementary pathways to higher education in Portugal, helping transform scattered efforts into a coordinated and scalable model of opportunity.

We also believe that solidarity among peers can change lives.

That is why we designed the HELP! Fund – a national student solidarity fund built on a simple but powerful idea: students supporting students, ensuring that no one is forced to abandon their studies because of unexpected financial hardship.

We know that education transforms lives because we see that transformation every day.

We see it in Gadheer. In Amer. In Salma. In Mustafa. In Shakilla. In Anastasiia. In Alina. In Mashid. In Hassam. In Genwa. Once young people who were forced to flee and put their life plans on hold, they are now professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, community leaders, and confident individuals — a powerful reminder that education does not simply change lives; it changes futures. Their stories show us what becomes possible when we replace barriers with opportunities and exclusion with inclusion.

On World Refugee Day, words alone are not enough.
Solidarity is measured by the choices we make.
So ask yourself: What if it were you?
And then turn that question into action.
Support. Share. Advocate. Donate. Get involved. Join the movement.
Because no one chooses to become a refugee.
But all of us can choose to be part of the solution.
